Roses: A Crash Course on the Different Rose Varieties

As one of the most popular selling flowers for all events, roses come in all shapes and sizes, which can be hard to keep track of. Here’s a lowdown to give you all the information you need on roses. When you start to pick out roses for your event it is important to recognize that wild roses very different from commercially grown roses. For this reason the categories can be simplified into Hybrid Tea Roses (standard roses), Sweetheart Roses, Garden Roses, and Spray Roses.

The Hybrid Tea Rose (standard rose)

  • This is the most common type of rose, which has been deemed the ‘standard rose’ within the floral industry. It is called the hybrid tea rose because it was initially a cross between a tea rose and a hybrid perpetual in 1867. This classic flower is undeniably beautiful and elegant.

Garden Roses

  • Blooms on garden roses typically have more of a cup shape and more ruffled petals than the standard rose. These unique flowers have a fluffy texture that will add a soft and romantic feel to your event.

Sweetheart Rose

  • This variation of the rose is typically a petite standard rose with smaller blooms. They have all the beauty and fragrance of standard roses but can be used in higher quantities, therefore giving a seemingly fuller arrangement.

Spray Roses

  • Spray roses are an even smaller variation of roses that have multiple small blooms attached to one primary stem. They typically have 3-5 heads, which can be used as filler or the primary flowers of the arrangement. These versatile flowers are absolute beauties!
